"Dewey Defeats Turman" Chicago Daily Tribune

"Dewey Defeats Turman" Chicago Daily Tribune

One of the best condition copies of the infamous November 3, 1948 "Dewey Defeats Truman" early edition of Chicago Daily Tribune projecting the wrong winner in the 1948 presidential election. Long a collector's item, surviving copies of the press run of 150,000 have dwindled. Many offered as "originals" have the upper right corner being cut off, having been treated as "returns" after the red-faced paper removed them from newsstands. This full issue is intact and contains the other marker of authenticity: 5 upside-down sentences in the far right column. Condition is very good. An amusing footnote is that, even after the mistake, the GOP-friendly paper still wouldn't face reality. The replacement edition banner read: "Early Dewey Lead Narrows."
