Dit Clapper’s 1939 Babe Siebert Memorial All Star Game Wool Sweater

Dit Clapper’s 1939 Babe Siebert Memorial All Star Game Wool Sweater

The Babe Siebert Memorial game was played in October of 1939, in tribute to the former NHL star who had drowned during the off season. Following the tragic accident, the NHL Board of Governors organized what would be the third All Star game of its kind with all proceeds going to Siebert’s family. For the first time ever the All Star Team was chosen by members of the Canadian Press, and this would later serve as the criteria for future All Star selections. This perfectly preserved sweater was worn by the first player to record twenty seasons in the NHL, Hall of Fame defenseman Aubrey “Dit” Clapper. Fantastic felt star on the chest proclaims “NHL All Stars 1939”. In cream wool with black and orange trim, this historic uniform has the McNiece Sports tag in the back hem and Clapper’s number “3” on the back in black felt. Until recently this sweater was on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto and comes with the descriptive plaque reading “A.C. Babe Siebert memorial Game jersey worn by Aubrey “Dit” Clapper on October 29, 1939. Clapper and his All Star teammates easily handled the Montreal Canadiens by a score of 5-2”. In exceptional condition. From the personal collection of the late Aubrey “Dit” Clapper.
