Earl Torgeson Single Signed "Stat Baseball"

Earl Torgeson Single Signed "Stat Baseball"

Earl Torgeson was an immediate hit with the Braves as a rookie in 1947, batting .281 with 16 homers. In the 1948 World Series, he led all hitters with a .389 batting average (7-for-18). He hurt his left shoulder trying to break up a double play in mid-May 1949 and was sidelinied for the remainder of the season. Although the injury hampered him throughout his career, he returned in 1950 to lead the NL with 120 runs scored and in 1951 had career highs of 24 HRs and 92 RBIs. After he dropped to .230 in 1952, he was sent to the Phillies in a four-team trade, and never had another big season. He appeared with the White Sox in the 1959 World Series, was released in 1961, and signed with the Yankees as a player-coach for the final month of the season. Since that time and his passing in 1990 he has become one of the toughest 1961 Yankees to find on a single signed baseball. This beautiful white example has been personalized to Leo and is inscribed with all of Torgeson's teams. On one panel he wrote "Boston Braves 1947-52" and "Phillies 1953-55." On the other panel he penned "Detroit Tigers 1955-57" and on another "Chicago White Sox 1957-61." The most important though is the panel on which he wrote "New York Yankees 1961-World Series Braves-1959 Sox-1961 Yankees." All penmanship is in blue ink, grading 8/10 on an ONL (Feeney) baseball that rates NRMT or better. This is only the second Torgeson single signed baseball we've encountered.
