Early 1900s Hilltop Park Game-Action Photograph (PSA Type I)

Early 1900s Hilltop Park Game-Action Photograph (PSA Type I)

Original Type I photograph capturing a game in progress at Hilltop Park, circa 1910. This is an exceptional scene as it shows how much the game has changed in the past 100 years. Taken from the perspective of the grandstand just to the right of home plate, the photo includes the left side of the field and grandstand, including the scoreboard and some the advertising signs on the left field wall. What is remarkable is that half the crowd is either sitting or standing on the field, just outside the foul lines. Owners during that time would never turn away paying customers just because there were no more available seats. Instead, they would accommodate them on the field of play. That, as one would imagine, caused problems for the opposing team, especially in the outfield, where the crowd would surge forward on fly balls so that the visiting fielder could not catch them, resulting in ground-rule doubles. Conversely, the crowd would surge backward on fly balls hit by the opposing club, so that they could be caught. Four Brown Brothers credit stamps appear on the reverse, along with handwritten editorial notations, including “N Y Yankees Early Game ca 1910.” (The team was not officially known as the Yankees until 1913.) The photo (6.25x4.5”) displays a tiny crease in the lower right corner and is otherwise in Excellent condition. Culled from the legendary Brown Brothers Photo Archive. PSA encapsulated as Type I Authentic.
