Early 1900s Red Ames New York Giants Cabinet Card by Hall's Studio
Leon "Red" Ames was a National League pitcher from 1903-1919, primarily for the New York Giants. On the great New York Giant teams of the early 20th Century, Ames was a regular starting pitcher whose best year was in 1905 when he went 22-8 for the World Champion New Yorkers. He was 183-167 in his MLB career with a lifetime ERA of 2.63. Ames had a big breaking curveball, but he was often plagued by wildness. He also pitched on the New York Giant pennant winning teams of 1911 and 1912. In this portrait photo, the hatless Ames seems a dead ringer for modern actor Nick Cage. Cabinet cards rose to prominence in the 1870s, but the advent of personal photography in the early 1900s led to fewer cabinet cards in ensuing years. The card features a thin photograph on a card, typically 4.25x6.5", as is this one. On the back of the card is printed: "Photography by Brown Brothers 1482 Broadway, N.Y." A lasting remembrance of vintage baseball.
