Early 1900s Stadium Concessions Peanut Warmer
"Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack," is a key part of the iconic lyrics to the unofficial national baseball anthem of "Take me Out to the Ball Game," and when Jack Norworth and Albert Von Tilzer wrote the song in 1908, peanuts, often hot peanuts, were a staple of ballpark food. Presented is an authentic, early 1900s peanut warmer, and although not confirmed, there is a good chance this was used at a stadium or arena. From the Eastern Pennsylvania area, this was used by the McGee Brothers from Easton, Pennsylvania. Mostly made of tin, the warmer has some bruises and tarnishing, but it has a great look. It is paint decorated, and the painting and lettering are all original. The warmer's base measures 15x16". The highest point from top to bottom is approx. 21.25". The front is glass. behind the glass "HOT" is visible. Although partially obscured, the lid reads,"Uncle Sam Peanut Warmer." The lid also has a small seal that reads, "Patented July 25, 1882/The Lutted Candy Co." At the bottom of the front is written, although partially obscured, "Uncle Sam." Lettering on both the left and right sides reads, "McGee Bros. Wholesale Confectioners Easton, PA." The back of the warmer reads, "PEANUTS." On the small door that opens in the back, it appears that a small hook is missing. The lid on top is partially detached. Well over a century old, this peanut warmer does exhibit the effects of time and use: some scratches, some paint loss, some minor bends in the tin, and a very small hole in the bottom front. Overall, the vintage charm and hand-painted tin surpass any of these minor imperfections. This peanut warmer will make a wonderful addition to any collection of stadiana, and viewers will almost be able to smell the wafting aroma of the hot peanuts as viewers of this classic peanut warmer emotionally once again take themselves out to the ballgame.
