Early 1970s Conredge Holloway University of Tennessee Game Worn Jersey - First African American Quarterback in the SEC
University of Tennessee football jersey worn during the early 1970s by Condredge Holloway, the first African American starting quarterback both at Tennessee and in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The orange tear-away jersey features the number "7" on the front, reverse, and each shoulder. "Holloway" is lettered on the reverse, directly above the number. All letters and numerals are screened in white. A wash tag in the collar features the number "42" written in faded blue ink (presumably denoting the size). The jersey displays moderate-to-heavy wear, including light staining. This is a historically significant jersey worn by one of the first major African American quarterbacks in collegiate history. In 1971, Condredge Holloway graduated Lee High School in Huntsville, Alabama, as one of the top baseball and football prospects in the country. Chosen by the Montreal Expos with the fourth pick of the first round in the MLB draft, he eventually chose a college education over the rigors of minor league life and enrolled at the University of Tennessee. While there, he excelled in both sports. In 1972 he won the starting quarterback job on the football team, thereby becoming the first African American quarterback at Tennessee and in the SEC. During his three seasons as the starting quarterback, he led the Vols to an overall record of 25-9-2 and three Bowl appearances. He was equally impressive on the diamond, earning All SEC and All American honors at shortstop during his 1975 senior season. Condredge was drafted in the the twelfth round of the 1975 NFL draft because he was looked at as a defensive back prospect, not a quarterback. Undaunted, and confidant in his abilities as a quarterback, Condredge decided to play in the Canadian Football League. There, he enjoyed a successful quarterback career, earning the CFL's Most Outstanding Player Award in 1982 and leading the Toronto Argonauts to the league championship the following season.
