Early 20th Century Boxing History Lesson Original Tad

Early 20th Century Boxing History Lesson Original Tad

When he was thirteen years old, Thomas Aloysius Dorgan (Tad) lost the last three fingers of his right hand in an accident with a factory machine. While recuperating, he drew a lot of cartoons as manual therapy. Soon afterwards, he found employment as a staff artist on the San Francisco Bulletin. Eventually he went to the New York Journal, where he became perhaps America's favorite comic strip writer. This is one of the finest cartoons we have seen from him. It is like seeing six separate scenes at the same time. All of them deal with the history of heavyweight boxing in the early 20th century. This is the height of cartoon artwork of the era or of any era. After looking at this, it is impossible to not see the influence of modern day marvel, Robert Crumb. Piece is 24-1/2 x 12-1/4". In the original frame (26-5/8 x 14-1/4"). EX-MT condition.
