Early 20th Century Collection of Silks & Leathers
Fine collection of rare 1912 L-series “Leathers”: George Washington (‘Generals’ series), U.S. Flag (‘Flags’ series) 2 from the ‘Cabaret’ series (‘Old Point Comfort Girl’ and ‘Cabaret Girl’) plus one gentleman’s portrait listed as #231. Collectors are very familiar with L1 Baseball Players, but Generals and Flags, which are a part of the same series, are just as rare. These leathers were issued as part of the same promotion as T3 Turkey Reds and S81 Silks. All were available only by mail in exchange for coupons packaged with Helmar "Turkish Trophies" brand tobacco. Each measures 9.5 x 11.5 inches at their widest and tallest point. The Washington leather (#201) has one small pinhole in the top left tab, partially missing the top right tab, otherwise clean with some normal scuff marks for this issue. The Flag leather (#171) shows pinholes on all four tabs but is complete, showing only scuff marks and moderate signs of handling. The (2) ‘Cabaret’ series leathers are VG and NM (the latter with very vibrant colors!). #231, a businessman’s portrait, is in EX-MT condition with no pinholes but several slight indentations on the surface. As a bonus, a silk from the same era is included, that of a German soldier from Zira Cigarettes, in fine condition save for some normal fraying at the top and bottom. A beautiful windfall for collectors of leathers and silks from the early 20th century! Total of 6 items.
