Eddie Murray Signed 2,985th Hit Baseball and Banner
<p>In 1995, as Eddie Murray got closer to his 3,000th hit, the Cleveland Indians began the practice of collecting his hit balls and conducting a countdown at Jacobs Field by means of a red banner that was displayed on one of the stadium walls. Offered here is Eddie Murray's 2,985th hit ball, and the banner that was hung at the stadium following his 2,985th hit, each signed by Murray. The official American League (Budig) ball displays moderate soiling and a few abrasions (indicative of game use) and has been inscribed by Murray in black ink (grading 7/10) across the sweet spot "Eddie Murray 2985." The red vinyl banner (24x24"), which features a metal grommet in each corner, displays a white number "15" (indicating that Murray needed fifteen more hits to reach 3,000). Murray has inscribed the banner "Eddie Murray #33" (his uniform number) in black ink (7/10) on the numeral "5. The banner displays wear moderate wear, including "bubbling" to the applied white numerals. (A small bubble affects the "Ed" in Murray's signature.) </p><p>Murray's 2,985th career hit occurred on June 12, 1995, in a game against the Baltimore Orioles at Jacobs Field, in Cleveland. Murray had two hits and an RBI in Cleveland's 4-3 win Murray's first hit in the game, a double off Kevin Brown in the bottom of the fourth inning, was hit number 2,985, which resulted in the offered banner being hung at the stadium. The banner wasn't displayed for long, however, as Murray's second hit, another double of Kevin Brown, came just one inning later in the bottom of the fifth inning. Murray's 3,000th hit finally occurred on June 30th in a game against the Minnesota Twins at the Hubert H. Humphery Metrodome. This is a unique pair of items relating to Murray's quest in joining the elite 3,000 hit club, with the added appeal of each having been signed by Murray. <em>Please note: the banner has been stored rolled for many years and will be shipped rolled. </em></p>
