Exceptional 1960 Sporting News Original Art by Ray Gotto
Begs the question, "What Similar Claim to Fame" do these to managers (Connie Mack and John McGraw), plus 18 other stars including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig "have in common." Star of the auction, this 17x24" pen and ink was published in the July 13, 1960, issue of the Sporting News and comes with original tear sheet. Auctioned by them several years back. One of the most important yet unsung baseball artists, Ray Gotto was creator of immortal baseball comic books "Ozark Ike" and "Cotton Woods." His high point was his work for the Sporting News, of which this piece was one. Ray was paid $1,000 for his creation of the New York Mets skyline logo which has remained virtually unchanged to this day. Ray died penniless in 2003, the billion-dollar team refusing multiple requests for aid.
