Fantastic July 2, 1921 Dempsy-Carpenter Colorized and Hand Tinted 29 x 39 Photo
This is, without question, one of the nicest boxing display pieces that we have in this auction. Huge hand tinted photograph (29 x 39'') by the noted studio National of New York. A young Dempsey walks away as Carpentier lays motionless on the ground. Carefully painted onto the image is "Dempsey - Carpentier / Battle of the Century / Jersey City - July 2, 1921 / Attendance 90,000 Receipts $1,626,380 / Promoters / Rickard - Ringling." After the photo was tined, it was covered with a glossy protective coating. There is a 3 x 5'' section in the center where the coating has worn off. Luckily, however, you really have to look for it as it blends well into the background. If you examine the piece closely you will see a few other small spots where the coating has worn off, but they are very small and easy to miss. This is the type of piece that immediately draws your attention because of the large size and colors. A great centerpiece for a boxing display collection. Framed to 35 x 46''. This was the first million dollar gate in the history of boxing. A big photo for a big fight.
