First Ever Ottawa Rough Riders Football Championship Medal (1898)

First Ever Ottawa Rough Riders Football Championship Medal (1898)

First ever Ottawa Rough Riders championship medal. From the first ever year they were known as the Rough Riders in the same year Theodore Roosevelt and HIS "Rough Riders" became an icon for his charge up San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War. This later Canadian Football League team is one of the most successful in North America with roots going back to 1876. This is from their "Dominion Championship" for 1898. Their eight games in the season are emblazoned in enamel on an incredible figural football that actually spins to show the complete schedule. It is unlike anything we have ever seen! Their classic red, white and black colors are inset in stunning enamel with "Champions 98" beside their unforgettable bulldog mascot. Marked "14K" gold with the fine jewelry maker "Rosenthal" engraved on the verso along with original recipient "P. Jory," who is on the Rough Riders roster for that season. Highly figural and exceptionally rare, this is the only one known to exist. Very limited presentation, hence the rarity and importance. One of the finest Canadian football pieces ever to come on the collector's market.
