First Home Run Baseball at New Busch Stadium - from the Man Who Caught It
As much a part of the landscape as the Gateway Arch, Busch Stadium has been a fixture in the city of St. Louis. This is THE first ever home run baseball hit in the new Busch Stadium on April 10, 2006 against the Milwaukee Brewers. In the top of the second inning, Bill Hall hit this very ball, which was caught by long-time St. Louis Cardinals season ticket owner Wes Donoho, out of the park. Included is a three-page handwritten letter from Wes himself documenting how he came to catch the ball. The story is quite intriguing, as Wes and his fiance owned season tickets for the first row bleachers in right field for nine years. On the last day of the 2005 season, the season ticket holder that sat behind Wes actually busted up his seats knowing that Wes paid for them. The following year, at the first game in the new stadium, that man moved over a section and Wes went over to chat because he was upset that he destroyed his seats. Next thing you know he heard the crack of the bat and the ball hit the palm of his right hand and bounced out. Even though Wes was getting stepped on and pushed, he came out on top with the ball. As Wes was walking back to his seat, he passed the man who's seat he was standing at when he caught the ball! The Official Major League (Selig) ball itself features the Inaugural Game April 10, 2006 Busch Stadium logo on the south panel and is pictured in the article that shows Wes holding the exact ball. Rock solid provenance, straight from the man who caught the ball and is a true piece of both St. Louis Cardinals and baseball history. This was from the Cardinals' 2006 World Season Championship season only adding to the ball's historical significance.
