First True NFL Championship Team - 1925 Pottsville Maroons Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame Award
One of the true pioneer teams of the National Football League and one of its cult favorites. Pottsville, Pennsylvania's Maroons existed between 1925 and 1929, when the franchise relocated to Massachusetts. An offshoot of the original Pottsville Eleven club that was established in 1920, the Maroons enjoyed their most fruitful season in 1925, when they appeared to have won the NFL title but were effectively stripped of the honor by the commissioner, who suspended the players. It was small consolation, but this plaque was given to the team and kept by Joe Sacko. It comes with programs from the first annual awards banquet held in 1969. The plaque, which was presented by the Pennsylvania Sports hall of Fame, is in EX condition with slightly bowed metal attachments. A truly important piece of football history.
