Flag Raising on Mt. Suribachi Photos (2)

Flag Raising on Mt. Suribachi Photos (2)

Two original photos from the famous flag raising on Iwo Jima's Mt. Suribachi, an event which would "ensure the existence of the Marine Corps for the next 500 years." One photo (EXMT) measures 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" and pictures the Marines having just raised the flag on the summit; this photo was taken in person by PFC Jewel Lee Hudson, Jr., who was the recipient of two purple hearts, the medal of valor and several other awards for heroism at the Battle of Mt. Suribachi. The second photo (VG-EX) was taken by the unit commander, is mounted to cardboard, measures 12" x 17" and pictures Hudson's unit following the flag rasing, with Hudson in the back row, second from left.
