Forbes Field Scoreboard #7
Presented is a metal No. 7 that was used in the Forbes Field scoreboard in Pittsburgh. Forbes Field was the third home field of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who played there from 1909 through June 28, 1970, when the Pirates moved into Pittsburgh's newly constructed Three Rivers Stadium. Forbes Field was also the first home of the Pittsburgh Steelers' football team, then known as the Pittsburgh Pirates, the same name as the baseball team. Forbes Field was also the former home of the Homestead Grays, a powerful team in Negro League baseball, featuring Hall of Famers Josh Gibson and Buck Leonard. The University of Pittsburgh Panthers' home games were at Forbes Field, and many great prize fights, including some of World Light Heavyweight Champion, Pittsburgh's own Billy Conn, were held at the venue. The Pirates won their last game at Forbes Field, the second game of a double-header, and the last out was recorded in the field by Hall of Fame second baseman Bill Mazeroski, who hit a walk-off homer at Forbes Field to win the 1960 World Series over the New York Yankees. On May 25, 1935, Babe Ruth, playing for the Boston Braves, hit his final three home runs at Forbes Field. The No. 7 sign is made of heavy metal, and it has the original paint, a white No. 7 on a green background. There are three small holes (about 1/4" diameter each) and one larger hole (about an inch in diameter) used to hang the sign from the scoreboard. The No. 7 is on one side, and the reverse side is painted all in green. The No. 7 side shows some rust under the paint, (or where tiny portions of paint have come off), some minor paint loss, and a few scratches, yet overall, the sign is in very good condition. The sign measures 12.5x16", and it weighs slightly more than two pounds. It was likely used for decades, and it was removed in 1970 when the stadium was demolished. Remnants of Forbes Field, including part of an outfield wall, are still at the site, now on the University of Pittsburgh campus. The No. 7 scoreboard sign is a great memento from iconic Forbes Field.
