Frank Malzone 50th Anniversary Gold Glove Award Presented by Rawlings

Displayed is a stunningly gorgeous Rawlings 50th Anniversary Gold Glove Award presented in 2007 to former Boston Red Sox third baseman Frank Malzone, who grew up in the Bronx in New York City as a Yankee fan, and then played most of his career for the Bronx Bombers' biggest rival, the Boston Red Sox. On a plaque on the face of the award is printed "Rawlings Gold Glove Award." Printed at the base of the award, on an attached plaque, is "Frank Malzone/In honor of the 50th Anniversary of your winning the first ever Rawlings Gold Glove Award as the best defensive third baseman in Major League Baseball." On the outside of the ring finger slot of the glove is a cloth label reading "THE GOLD GLOVE CO." In addition to Malzone, the inaugural Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners: 1B, Gil Hodges; 2B, Nellie Fox; SS Roy McMillan; OF, Minnie Minoso; OF, Willie Mays; OF, Al Kaline; C, Sherm Lollar; P Bobby Shantz. Malzone was in great company. Frank played 12 years in the Major Leagues (1955-66), all with the Boston Red Sox except his final season with the California Angels. Malzone was a decent hitter who batted .274 lifetime, with 133 home runs. As a fielder, Malzone was superb. He won the inaugural Gold Glove Award for third baseman in 1957, at a time when to win the Gold Glove Award a player had to be judged the best at his position in the Major Leagues. Starting in 1967, a Gold Glove was awarded to the best fielder at each position in each Major League. Malzone won the next two Gold Glove Awards for third baseman, and Brooks Robinson won the third base Gold Glove for the next 16 consecutive years. Malzone was an 8-time All-Star, and in 1957 he was first in the AL in putouts for a third baseman, first in third base assists from 1957-59, and first in third base double plays from 1957-61. After his playing career, Malzone was a scout for the Red Sox for 35 years, and also did administrative work for the franchise. He passed away in 2015. The walnut base of the award is 17.25" long, 0.75" high, and 6.25" deep. The height of the award, from the base to the top of the gold lame glove, is approx. 14". On the back of the wrist strap is the Rawlings name and logo, and the Rawlings logo is also along the thumb slot of the glove. The two gold-colored baseballs are unattached and rest in their holders. The 50th Anniversary Gold Glove Award came right from Frank Malzone, and it is in EX-MT condition. This offering is visually stunning and is sure to magnify interest in your collection.
