Franklin D. Roosevelt Single Signed Baseball
Stunning orb signed around 1934-35 is one of the best Presidential signed baseballs extant. President Franklin D. Roosevelt's signature on this baseball embodies his love of the game. Roosevelt threw out the first pitch 11 times, more than any President, and his "green light" letter to Commissioner Landis in 1942 encouraged baseball to keep playing through World War II in order to entertain a busy nation. Roosevelt's simple, yet bold (9/10) script in black ink turns this cream colored Reach American League sphere into a priceless artifact - one we can assume he signed with affection. Roosevelt, who had polio, joked that he would attend more games if he didn't have to climb the steps. But he chose his spots well, arriving at the games in a convertible surrounded by Secret Service agents. Roosevelt was in the stands for Babe Ruth's called shot on Oct. 1, 1932 and in 1937 he became the first president to attend an All-Star Game. When he died on April 12, 1945, the Washington Senators opened the season wearing black arm bands.
