George Kell's 2,000th Hit Baseball and Tigers Photograph
Hall of Fame third baseman George Kell concluded his 15-year career with the 1957 Baltimore Orioles, and it was with that club that he recorded the 2,000th hit of his career. The achievement is commemorated on this historic baseball that was hand-painted by Doc Werner and presented to the 10-time All-Star. This is actually the same Official American League (Harridge) ball with which he accomplished the milestone, and it has been shellacked (some of which is chipping). Also included in the lot is a framed 1950 Detroit Tigers presentational photo by Snuffy McGill with facsimile signatures as Kell spent more seasons with that club than any other (seven). The photo - which measures 17" x 21" - hung in Kell's auto dealership office for years and both items were obtained directly from the Hall of Famer by our consignor. George Kell began his career with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1943 and compiled a lifetime batting average of .306, highlighted by the American League batting title in 1949. After his playing days were over, he embarked on a successful, 40-year career in the broadcast booth, primarily with the Tigers.
