Gil Hodges By Nicholas Volpe
Though he's been gone for over 40 years now, Gil Hodges remains a beloved figure who transcended baseball. A lethal hitter with the Dodgers and the man who guided the Miracle Mets to the 1969 World Series championship, Hodges is resplendent in this colorful portrait reminiscent of the Union Oil set he did in 1962. It seems to predate that, though, based on the fact that Hodges went to the Mets as a veteran first baseman after the 1961 season, and the pre-zip code framer's label on the reverse. Measuring 24.5" x 28" in its original frame, there is an action sequence to the left of the portrait. Beyond the world of sport and film, artist Nicholas Volpe would be commissioned to create portraits of political giants John F. Kennedy, Winston Churchill, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan.
