1) This beautifully colored 8 x10" movie still from a scene in "Destry" features a turquoise ink signature of the legendary soldier, movie actor and country music composer. Audie Murphy is the most decorated U.S. soldier from WWII receiving the Medal of Honor along with 32 additional medals from the U.S. government, however he also received 5 medals from France and 1 from Belgium for his incredible valor and bravery in battle. Affixed to the verso is a first edition stamp of Audie Murphy printed in 1999. The photograph is in excellent condition with no creasing and great color quality. A great piece that honors one of America's greatest heroes. 2) Admiral William D. Leahy was the first U.S. military officer ever to hold a five-star rank. This is a letter he wrote to his childhood friend actor Charles Winninger in August, 1946, while he was traveling with President Truman serving as Chief of Staff to the Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy. Leahy was known as being critical of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Shortly after he wrote this letter Leahy resigned, in March, 1949, and the following year published his war memoirs, “I Was There.” Included with this letter are two small photos, one of Winninger, the other of Leahy. 3) Collection of ephemera related to Gutzon Borglum, the famous sculptor of The Presidents at Mount Rushmore. Included is a signed Mount Rushmore brochure, souvenir envelope, a postcard and several personal and fan letters. 4) For fan's of this great american author best known for his popular adventure novels that portrayed an idealized version of the wild west this is the lot for you. The lot includes 2 signed checks with the author's signature clearly legible. One check is written to John Butler in the amount of $100 dated July 17, 1916 drawn on an account from The Merchant's National Bank in Middletown, N.Y. The other, drawn from the same account, is dated Jan 12, 1917 and is written to an L.L. Bow for $3 dollars. Each check has the banks perforation marks but are in EX condition. 5) The artist and illustrator is best known for his iconic 1917 I Want You, Uncle Sam Army recruitment poster, of which more than 4 million copies were produced for WWI, and was again revived for WWII. The great thing about this envelope is that it is entirely penned in his own hand. The quality is VG with the writing being bold black ink and clearly legible. 5) This is a collection of 100+ letters written to the office of Kentucky Congressman William Natcher who served in office from 1953-1994. Almost all of the letters originate from various government offices and is written on those office's official stationary. For example there is a letter of resignation from the Postmaster General, several letters from various senator and fellow congressman offices and all sorts of other politically oriented documentation. You'll spend hours perusing through this multitude of letters and will be amazed by some of the names behind the correspondence.
