Hatfield Original Family Photographs from the Days of the Feud
These incredible images came directly from a member of the Hatfield family, of the famed Hatfield-McCoy Feud. There are seven images here and one duotone, all dating from the turn of the century. 1) Signed Carte de Visite of "Devil" Anse Hatfield. The patriarch of the clan, he is the man who settled the field in 1891. He has signed it on the front and in a different hand on the reverse is his names again as well as the phrase “The Hero of the Desperados.” Photo measures 2.5x3.5". 2) Devil Anse Hatfield Mounted Photograph. Vintage writing on front in family member's hand reading, “Devil Anse Hatfield. Father of the "Hatfield Boys" and one of the famous gang and an interesting figure in the feudal history of West Virginia." On the reverse, on pencil, it reads "2nd Ed. Tonite." Edges of cardboard mounting are tattered. Photo measures 5.5x4". 3) Mounted photograph labeled "Joe - Troy - Elias Hatfields, all brothers and sons of old "Devil Anse." In the photo, all three are holding shotguns. Two names, Willis and (unreadable) written vertically on left side in pencil. Edges of mounting are torn. Photograph measures 5.5x4". 4) Harry Hatfield Mugshot. Front and side view. Image is very light, with what looks like faded pen marks over the front view. Photo measures 4.5x3.5". 5) Hatfield Family Autographed Cabinet Photograph. The verso reads in pencil “Complements of” with their actual autographs below, which unfortunately have been crossed out in pencil. Expert restoration may help bring them back out. Also, you can make out the very faint makings of the photographer on the reverse side of the image. Photo measures approximately 6x4". 6) Small image of the home of Cap Hatfield. Verso reads, “Home of Cap. Hatfield on the Tug River in Buckhanan (sic) County, Va. where a brilliant member of a notorious clan is spending his days in seclusion.” Photo measures 3x2.25". 7) 1921 wire photo of Cap Hatfield with two vintage newspaper clippings affixed to the back announcing his death on August 22, 1890 at age 67. Photo measures 8.5x6.5". 8) Pink duotone promotional card of George C. Love “Prosecuting Attorney of Fayette City.” The great vintage writing on verso is his bio: "Geo. C. Love, present prosecuting atty. of Fayette County, against whom Fayette County grand juries have returned a total of 171 indictments, many of hese for grand offenses, and who was pardoned in 1908 by Gov. Dawson in order that he might be eligible to office." Measures approximately 4.5x3". Total of eight pieces plus original envelope with vintage newspaper articles dealing with the Hatfield family.
