High Grade Example 1911 "The Book of Baseball"

When this book was issued in 1911, it was the definitive history of baseball. Even the cover states so as the book was detailed “from the earliest day to present season.” As it states in the foreword, “It is the first baseball book to employ large generous page and heavy paper, giving the pictures and text the treatment they deserve.” And those features have garnered this book the tremendous desirability it exhibits today.

There are over 200 large featured photos including those of individuals and various teams including the 1910 New York Giants and Philadelphia A’s World Series teams plus the 1910 New Orleans Pelicans, which won the Southern League championship and featured a young outfielder named Joe Jackson.

While the book’s large format was adored by men and boys alike 105 years ago, this same large format precipitated most surviving examples to be in terrible condition, with heavy edge wear and soiling to be commonplace. This book was a virtually reference guide for the beginnings of the father/son baseball love eventually passed down through the generations, and one could see this book being brought out for further “reading” after a hearty home cooked meal was enjoyed. Therefore, those books which have survived are in lower grade relative to this tremendous example. With a very clean off-white surface (only one small stain on the catcher's shoulder), and a few scratches, this book displays beautifully.

While the binding is fully secure, the corners of the thick heavy board covers exhibit light even rounding and some light to moderate edge wear. The two large covers are in overall great condition compared to most other examples, which translates to wonderfully clean pages almost all of which have MINT corners.

You can certainly tell this book was not used as often as intended. Gently flipping through this relic you can simply “feel” the very high quality nature in which it remains. This book is a must-have for the ultimate baseball library and one of the nicer examples which have come available in quite some time.
