Historically Important Arthur P. Gorman, Founding Member of Washington Nationals, Cabinet Card
Historic cabinet card features Arthur P. Gorman, former United States Senator from Maryland and a founder of the original 1859 Washington Nationals, widely considered to be the first recognized baseball team in America. Measuring 4x6.5", Gorman's image was likely from the late 1880s during his senatorial tenure. Front has a wonderfully preserved image of Gorman, with Parker 477 Penn Ave. Washington DC logo printed beneath. The verso identifies the subject along with some stray pencil marks, paper loss to the bottom, and stamps from Brown Brothers, as this is from their legendary archive. A couple of pinholes dot the left side with one having damaged the top left corner, and on the top right corner is a sticker affixed with the handwritten number 3194. Despite the imperfections, the card remains in magnificent condition considering its vintage, with the central image presenting crisply on the cardboard backing. In 1859 - at age 20 - Gorman was part of a group that started the Nationals, which proceeded to play in the National Association and the National League before folding in 1899. Gorman also became one of the star players of the Civil War era before winning a seat in the Delaware senate and, eventually, the US Senate, where he served from 1881-89, and again from 1893-97. Tremendous historical find, the first vintage image of Arthur P. Gorman that we have handled.
