Huge Collection of Max Baer Photos (170)
Max Baer is lately known for losing his heavyweight title to James J. Braddock in 1935, as famously retold in "Cinderella Man". But Baer was himself a hero, for defeating Hitler's favorite, Max Schmeling, while adding a Star of David to his trunks, for later (secretly) paying for the education of the children of a fighter who died as a result of a barrage of his powerful punches and, for maintaining his humor and perspective at all times. This group of wire service, publicity and family photographs covers the period from the late 1920's until Baer's death in 1959. Included are candid family scenes, ringside photos, shots of Baer with Jack Dempsey, James J. Braddock, and other fighters and celebrities of the time. The 170 black and white photos range in size from 5 1/2" x 6" to 8" x 11 1/2", and many have full captions and published newsprint attached. "International News Photo" stampings appear on some, and a few show crop marks and retouching for publication. An outstanding and unique archive of images of this legendary heavyweight champion.
