Important Find of J. Edgar Hoover Signed Letters (147)

Important Find of J. Edgar Hoover Signed Letters (147)

Nearly 150 pieces of correspondence from the desk of controversial FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover highlight this lot, with each one having been written to former agent Thomas E. Bishop and all from Hoover's estate. Most are on FBI stationary and are NRMT (just a few are in lesser condition), with the majority signed in at least 8/10 ink "J. Edgar Hoover." Fewer than 10% are signed with just the initials "J.E.H." As one might expect, the content is fascinating and gives some insight into Hoover and the inner workings of the FBI, which he founded. There are details of cases, gifts given to Hoover, reprimands, holiday wishes, promotions, etc. The lot also includes 35 letters signed by associate director Clyde Tolson, who was so close to Hoover that many assumed they were lovers, though other sources claim their relationship was more professional or brotherly. There are also 10 letters signed by Pat Gray. These letters are in addition to the 147 from Hoover. They date from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s. The secretive Hoover was rumored to have abused the jurisdiction of the FBI and used it as his own personal police force. Regardless, these letters provide a revealing peek into one of the 20th Century's most fascinating characters.
