Inaugural Hall of Fame Class Centennial Photo (PSA Type IV)

Inaugural Hall of Fame Class Centennial Photo (PSA Type IV)

Displayed is a 1973 8x10" Type IV photo that depicts 10 of the 11 living Hall of Famers at the time of baseball's Centennial. The photo is a later issued example off a duplicate negative from a photo originally created on June 12, 1939, at the celebration of Baseball's Centennial, in Cooperstown, New York. The celebration featured an exhibition game between teams managed by Honus Wagner and Eddie Collins, won 4-2 by Wagner's team, and the issuance of a First Day U.S. Postage Stamp that depicted baseball, the first-ever U. S. stamp with a sports theme. The later issued circa. 1973 example was from a photo made when George Sisler, the last living person in the photo, passed away. In the front row, left to right: Eddie Collins, Babe Ruth, Connie Mack, and Cy Young. In the back row, left to right: Honus Wagner, Grover Cleveland Alexander, Tris Speaker, Napoleon Lajoie, George Sisler, and Walter Johnson. Ty Cobb, the other living Hall of Famer at the time of Baseball's Centennial, had transportation problems and arrived at the Hall of Fame mere minutes after this photo was taken. The back of the photo includes a newspaper clipping from an undetermined newspaper that shows the bottom section of the photo and a caption that includes much of the aforesaid information. The photo comes with a PSA/DNA LOA.
