Jack Dempsey - Tommy Gibbons Fight Program And Ticket
Jack Dempsey was a savage boxer and as big as Ruth in his day. Dempsey didn’t know about backing up. Move forward and hurt the other guy. On July 4, 1923, Dempsey put his heavyweight title on the line against Tommy Gibbons in Shelby, Montana. It wasn’t a particularly exciting fight. Dempsey aimed at the head of Gibbons and Gibbons aimed at the body of Dempsey. Both fighters missed far more than they connected. Dempsey retained the title with a 15 round unanimous decision. We have an official program of the match and it’s a doozy. Filled with many photos and stories about the combatants and the town of Shelby, this 18 page booklet has a great period feel to it. Program is VG-EX. Also in this lot, a ticket for the bout. Row B and with a pretty hefty $30 price tag. Ticket is NRMT. Finally, the newspaper account of the battle from the Friday, July 6th edition of the “Shelby Promoter.” The fight was a decision but this item is a knockout.
