Jack Dempsey v. Jess Willard Posters from Birth of a Champion (8)

Jack Dempsey v. Jess Willard Posters from Birth of a Champion (8)

It was the worst slaughter in boxing history, and in bold red lettering below this poster’s title of the fight film (1939) of that 1919 Jack Dempsey and Jess Willard bout, “The Birth of a Champion,” is the claim, “First showing on any screen;” it wasn’t until 1940 - the year this film more than likely was first shown, twenty-one years later - that Franklin Roosevelt lifted the 1912 ban on fight films, a law inspired by the racial strife of Jack Johnson beating the “Great White Hope,” Jim Jeffries, in 1910. Eight copies of this 28x22” 1939 poster for this remarkable film are offered here. Condition is EX+, of heavy cardboard, with multiple cantankerous images of these two heavyweight fighters.
