Jack Johnson & Jess Willard Old Whiskey Ad (27x24")
In 1915 the exiled Johnson’s need for money and white America’s need for satisfaction set the stage for the former Champ’s return. Faced against a younger, more powerful opponent, not to mention time itself, the 37-year old would enter the ring with hopes of a return to glory and America. This interesting advertisement created by “Old Warwick Whiskey” is in essence a photomontage dedicated to that historic bout. The two pugilists are surrounded by images of event participants, Oriental Park Race Track in Havana and various documents associated with fight. There is light paper loss to both the frame and collage along with some minor spotting. Overall VG-EX.
