Jack Johnson World Championship Fight Worn Sash from Jim Jeffries Barn

Jack Johnson World Championship Fight Worn Sash from Jim Jeffries Barn

The very sash worn by the first Black World Champion, Jack Johnson. The powerful Jack Johnson is an historical hero in the ring annals, and his is one of the most fascinating and earliest tales of crossing color lines in sports. Red sash with elegantly tasseled ends was worn by World's Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson upon entering the ring before a fight. It is artfully arranged in this large framed display, measuring 31x28”, with matted full color Police Gazette print and b/w fight photo showing the hulking Jack Johnson standing over one of his victims. He is wearing similar sashes in both images. Overall EX-MT. This came from the famed Tommy Farmer boxing collection, one of the premier boxing collections of the early days. Later obtained by Joel Platt, it is believed that this piece was once a part of the famed Jeffries Barn boxing museum. For a piece such as this to have such provenance and to be of such quality is almost unheard of. LOA.
