Jackie Robinson's Final Brooklyn Dodgers Jacket w/Letter from Jackie Robinson
This beautiful Jackie Robinson game worn Brooklyn Dodgers jacket was the last one he ever wore in the league in which he changed forever and was gifted to our consignor's godfather in December 1956, just under two months after Jackie's last game. Robinson and the consignor's godfather were both tenants in the same Brooklyn building, and shortly before Jackie gave him the jacket, one of his relatives was involved in a fatal car crash. This lot comes with a heartfelt letter from Jackie on his stationery saying, "I was very sorry to hear of your loss and the injuries you suffered. To console you with words I realize would be quite futile. I only hope that as you improve each day you will get added strength to be a comfort to your mother." Jackie concluded the letter, and mentioned this exact jacket, with "I also hope you will be able to fit into my jacket very soon. My very best wishes." While the signature is secretarial, Robinson hand-wrote his address on the back of the envelope. Blue satin jacket with "Dodgers" nameplate on front and "42" stitched on the left sleeve right above the wrist, it has Skinner tagging in neck; and how "fitting" that the size tag inside the neck is "42." Displays outstanding use throughout with possible use in the 1956 World Series and the Dodgers' 1955 World Championship season just a year before. This is fresh to the hobby and has been a family heirloom for 60+ years, the only Jackie Robinson jacket we're aware of to be sold in public auction.
