James Corbett Photo and Ephemera Collection of 100
"Gentleman Jim" was college educated and in addition to boxing, pursued a career in acting. He has been called the father of modern boxing because of his scientific approach and innovations in technique that changed prizefighting from a brawl to an art form. Tremendous collection of personal photos that portrays a fun loving family man who apparently had a great life. Highlights include an 1800's 12 x 16" family photo showing Corbett at about the age of 20 with 11 other relatives on deteriorating mount. VG condition. 1903 photo (9 x 14") of Corbett with a boxing promoter. Good condition. Mount deteriorating too. Numerous photos of his wife. Several Valentine cards. Fantastic vintage signed photo of billiard legend Willie Hoppe inscribed in black fountain pen "To My Friend, Jim Corbett From Willie Hoppe". EX condition. 5 scripts written by Corbett in Fair condition. 8 x 10" sepia photos of Corbett's bicep, in boxing pose, and playing handball. Several photos of Corbett playing baseball, tennis, polo, in training, clowning with his friends and playing with his kids and the family's numerous dogs. Also includes a really unusual item to come across: a wooden weight in the approximate shape of a bowling pin that he used to work out with. A scroll like piece of paper with signatures of actors including William Frawley. Assorted newspaper clippings about Corbett. All of these items came out of Corbett's Bayside, NY residence.
