James Jeffries Leather (30x27")

James Jeffries Leather (30x27")

Enormous leather boasts an impressive drawing of James J. Jeffries, dating back to the period in which he was champion, after defeating Robert Fitzsimmons in 1899. When Jack Johnson won the title, becoming the first Black American to do so, there was a public outcry for Jeffries to return to the ring to win the title back for the white race. The two met on July 4, 1910 in Reno in one of the most socially significant prizefights in boxing history. Artist Bob Hopkins has depicted Jeffries in full fight pose and has added his name, “Jas J. Jeffries” at his feet and “Our Champion” adjacent to his finely tuned image. Leather is EX-MT except for some minor crazing. LOA.
