Jersey Walcott Knocks Down Joe Louis Folk Art Painting by Helen Taub (1950)
An extremely interesting piece by this artist, obviously influenced by the World War II era Works Progress Administration. It depicts a stunning treatment of Joe Louis on the canvas with "Jersey" Joe Walcott waiting impatiently in his neutral corner. The referee is magnificent in detail, adopting a stance more common to a wrestling ref. The scene is extremely accurate from the Walcott hairline to the gloves on a downed Louis. From the 1947 fight which was one of Louis' worst performances, made a sad necessity by his tax problems. By artist Helen Taub and signed by her "H. Taub 1950" with additional vintage letraset identifying tape. Original wood frame is overall 18x22". Oil on canvas EX-MT.
