Joe Louis' 1933 Golden Gloves Trophy (11.5" tall)
Offered is a major piece of boxing memorabilia, Joe Louis’ 1933 Golden Gloves award trophy presented to Louis by the Detroit Free Press. The trophy is stands 11.5” high with a slight bend at the top which does not detract from its natural beauty. On the fade of the cup is engraved, “Detroit Free Press, Golden Gloves - 1933 - awarded to Joe Louis, 175 lbs. Novice.” It is a true measure of Joe Louis’ significance in the world of boxing that this award was given to him with his name inscribed on it, a practice not often seen among the amateur awards. The trophy was originally given as a gift to Louis’ personal friend and barber, Sylvester Touchstone and includes a copy of a letter from Louis to Touchstone. The trophy sports a slight vintage patina with few blemishes or tarnishing. Excellent condition. Comes with LOA signed by boxing expert, Craig Hamilton and additional documentation including a copy of a letter from Joe Louis in which he mentions giving this trophy to Mr. Touchstone.
