Joe Louis First Promotion With Willie Pep On-Site Poster
On Wednesday, April 27, 1949 at the Olympia Stadium in Detriot, Joe Louis, now-retired heavyweight champion, was scheduled to put on his first fight card as a promoter with a show featuring Willie Pep against Elias Ask. The Pep-Ask fight fell out, but the show did go on with Art Aragon losing to Luther Rawlings and Bobby Dykes beating Lester Felton in the featured events. Offered here is an exceptionally rare on-site poster from this show. It pictures Pep, Louis and Jack Dempsey (who managed Ask). Poster is paper and has been linen backed. Color and images are bold. Fold lines and light restoration is evident, with some soiling. Measures 22x28."
