Joe Louis Man of the Half Century Award with Fight Worn Bronzed Glove
On May 11, 1975, the Boxing Writers Association bestowed on Joe this knockout piece of history, one of his fight-worn boxing gloves bronzed for eternity, for being named their "Man of the Half Century". The glove is attached on a swivel to a stately, two tiered wooden platform and is in great condition. Upon Joe's death in 1981, his widow Martha gave the glove to one of their closest friends, Rev. Gene Ewing, who gave the eulogy at the funeral. Rev. Ewing then gave the award in 1993 to Rev. and Mrs. Kathy Detalle, who owned it thereafter. The glove comes with a framed photo of the Brown Bomber on the occasion of receving the award, on which Martha Louis expressed her desire to give the glove to Dr. Ewing and expressed her appreciation to him for his kindness and friendship. There's also a program from Joe's funeral and the 8 x 10" photo used for its cover, and a LOA from Kathy Detalle.
