John F. Kennedy 1961 Inaugural Street Sign and 1963 Funeral Street Sign

John F. Kennedy 1961 Inaugural Street Sign and 1963 Funeral Street Sign

Pair of rare Washington D.C. temporary street signs issued, respectively, for John F. Kennedy's 1961 presidential inauguration and 1963 funeral. The white inaugural street sign, printed on sheet metal, reads "Presidential Inauguration/No Parking Midnight January 19 to Midnight January 20 1961." The sign (12x18"), which has five pre-drilled interior holes for mounting, displays wear commensurate with its age and former use, including minor surface blemishes and oxidation on the reverse. The second sign, for Kennedy's funeral, is the standard cardboard example used by the police for routine parking prohibitions (understandable given the unexpected and sudden nature of his death). The sign reads "Emergency No Parking After" along the top, with the specific dates and times (printed over prior lettering) listed below: "7 AM-Sunday to 6 30 PM-Monday Nov 24 & 25 1963." A handwritten notation in the lower left corner reads "Pres. Kennedy Funeral!" An additional handwritten notation, in red ink, reading "For Kennedy's Funeral," appears on the reverse. The sign (11x17") displays five pre-punched holes for mounting, as well as corner tears in the lower left and right, staining, and surface blemishes.
