John Henry "Pop" Lloyd Medal Presented to Baseball Hall of Famer Monte Irvin

John Henry "Pop" Lloyd Medal Presented to Baseball Hall of Famer Monte Irvin

Presented is a visually striking circa 2000 John Henry "Pop" Lloyd medal presented to Hall of Fame infielder/outfielder Monte Irvin, a star in both Negro Leagues and Major League baseball. Hall of Famer Pop Lloyd played professionally for 27 years, mostly for teams in the Negro Leagues. Among many teams Lloyd played for were the Philadelphia Giants, Leland Giants, the Hilldale Club, and the Bacharach Giants. A shortstop, Lloyd threw right-handed and batted left-handed, and the line drive hitter batted .349 in the Negro Leagues. He was an outstanding fielder, and he was known as "the black Honus Wagner." When Honus Wagner, an Inaugural Hall of Famer, heard what Lloyd was called, Wagner said, "It is an honor to be compared to him." Monte Irvin was a star in the Negro National League with the Newark Eagles, batting .349 lifetime for Newark. Kept out of the Major Leagues because of MLB's unwritten "Color Line," Irvin served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant during World War II and was at the Battle of the Bulge. After World War II, he broke into the Major Leagues in 1949 with the New York Giants and played with the Giants through 1955, followed by a final Major League season with the '56 Chicago Cubs. He was part of the 1954 New York Giants World Champions. In his Major League career, he hit .304. The medal is made of metal, and it is three inches in diameter. The obverse of the medal reads, "JOHN HENRY 'POP' LLOYD MEDAL/CHARACTER SERVICE ACHIEVEMENT." Engraved on the verso is, "MONTE IRVIN/THE NEGRO LEAGUES." A beautiful image of Lloyd, in relief, appears on the obverse. There is minor patina loss on the nose in the Lloyd image. The medal weighs 222 grams. The medal is in excellent condition, and it comes in its original 5x5x1" box.
