John L. Sullivan ALS

John L. Sullivan ALS

Extremely rare letter written by John L. Sullivan in 1908, long after his days as heavweight champ, in which he commiserates with an out of work buddy, telling him, "It will not be for long as I think you be out of the world if you were not doing manual labor of some kind." For Sullivan, such counsel was late-coming. Having squandered a fortune during his years as a carousing boxer, he retired to a Massachusetts farm and became a temperance lecturer until his death in 1918. The letter written in black ink on Rochester's Powers Hotel stationery is signed, "Yours, John L. Sullivan", a gorgeous grade-9 autograph. Letter is NRMT.
