John Willis Theater & Screen World Photo & Memorabilia Archive (approximately 10,000 pieces)

John Willis Theater & Screen World Photo & Memorabilia Archive (approximately 10,000 pieces)

What a fabulous archive of theater and entertainment material from famed theater and movie archivist John Willis of Theatre World and Screen World magazines. It consists of 16 boxes chock full of roughly 10,000 pieces. Contains a myriad of vintage material but is primarily vintage photographs (80%+). Here is a small sampling of what we found in the two boxes and photo here is of the same. VINTAGE PHOTOS: Most were theater, many by top photographers (Talbot, Swope, Holmes). Among highlights was Elia Kazan directing Tennessee Williams, Richard Harris, Henry Fonda, Mary Martin (Peter Pan), Gilda Radner, Lily Tomlin, Burgess Meredith, Lauren Bacall, Tom Jones. Major stars in early theater roles: Roy Scheider, Kevin Spacey, Robert Duvall, Andy Griffith, George C Scott, Frank Langella, James Woods, Dustin Hoffman, Bill Bixby, William Hurt, Sean Penn, Jason Robards, Walter Matthau and Kevin Bacon. Plus, Butterfly McQueen photo and neg, and files from Hello Dolly (Channing), Women Behind Bars (Divine), Play It Again Sam, Hamlet (Richard Burton), and Cabaret. Also includes lots of old dance material (Margot Fonteyn) and movie stills (Barbara Streisand, Star Wars, GWTW, Walter Pidgeon, The Patsy, early Paul Muni, and Nolte/Johnson in Macon County). AUTOGRAPHS: Personal cards and letters of Cliff Robertson, Blythe Danner, young Alec Baldwin (2), Lillian Gish, Melba Moore, Jane Alexander and more. Plus some "Biographical Data" sheets which were sent to young actors at the beginning of their careers. They returned them signed with handwritten detail outlining their careers and roles. The best name we saw was comic Stephen Wright. FILES: Complete files with photos, Playbills/programs, handbills, press releases, and tear sheets from major shows like Cats but some from quickly-closed, obscurities. Plus, all kinds of neat stuff like an unsigned Julie Andrews card, Jennifer Holiday wedding invitation, and more. Remember we found all this by sifting only two boxes and there is mostly prime material. From 1920s-90s with most '50s-70s. Thousands of dollars of breakdown value. Overall excellent.
