July 4, 1910 James Jeffries vs. Jack Johnson Full Ticket

July 4, 1910 James Jeffries vs. Jack Johnson Full Ticket

Full ticket to the “fight of the century.” What an event in the history of boxing - this is one of the most famous fights in boxing history. The white community was none too pleased at the sight of the first black heavyweight champion, or at the pitiful sight of their fallen hero, James Jeffries. This defeat was largely viewed as a tragedy. Previously undefeated Jeffries was almost killed by the younger Jack Johnson, but his corner threw in the towel after the 15th. A stunned crowd filed out of the arena completely dumbfounded and silent. Jack Johnson, without a scratch or scrape on him, appeared in front of a crowd of 5,000 people the following day to remark on the fight and his new status as undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. The crowd responded with insults to Johnson in front of his wife and threats on his life. Ticket measuring 2.5x6.5” was printed with the location, “San Francisco, Cal.” which was the original location that the fight was scheduled for. Due to the infamy of the brutal sport, the fight had to be moved to Reno. Ticket for section K, seat 131 is VG-EX, exhibiting some foxing. Printed on ticket is the cost of $50 - an especially expensive event for the times.
