July 4,1978 Paul Molitor Rookie Year Home Run Baseball - 6th Career HR! (Molitor Letter)
<p>"I hit this ball for my first H.R. at the Met off Gary Serum in the 6th inning," wrote Hall of Famer Paul Molitor on the side panel of this offered baseball. Molitor's blast came on July 4, 1978 at Metropolitan Stadium against the home team Minnesota Twins, the team for which Molitor would finish his career. This home run ball was hit during Molitor's rookie season, a year in which he hit .273, stole 30 bases, and finished second in the AL Rookie of the Year vote.Written on a side panel of the ball in an unknown hand is, "Losing 7-1 after the 6th/ Lost 7-2". On side panels, also in an unknown hand, is "Lose 7-1 [sic] to Gary Serum", and "Homerun [sic] at Met/ July 4th, 1978". The Official Ball American League/ Lee MacPhail President" stamp has been removed and written in an unknown hand in that spot in blue ink from a ballpoint pen is, "1st HR Met" Minn." On the sweet spot, Molitor has written his signature and inscribed 7/4/1974, both in blue ink from a ballpoint pen. Above Molitor's signature is printed, in an unknown hand, "Paul Molitor of [sic], and this aforementioned writing has faded or been partially removed. Molitor played for 21 Major League seasons. He spent his first 15 seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, and then he spent three seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays and his final three years with the Minnesota Twins. Molitor wound up his career with 3,319 hits. Molitor was both a second and third baseman as well as a DH. He possessed a fine combination of speed and power, as he stole 504 bases and slammed 234 home runs while hitting .306 lifetime. The ball <span style="font-size: 10pt;">comes from Molitor's personal collection, and it comes with a LOA from Molitor. The shows some darkening and exhibits nice use.</span></p>
