June 15th, 1926, Cardinal Patrick O'Donnell First Pitch Baseball (ex-Jimmy Ring Collection)

June 15th, 1926, Cardinal Patrick O'Donnell First Pitch Baseball (ex-Jimmy Ring Collection)

Fascinating baseball features the notable inscription, "Cardinal O'Donnell's Toss This Ball at Polo Grounds on June 15, 1926." Indeed, Patrick Cardinal O'Donnell did throw out this Official National League (Heydler) ball as the first pitch as the New York Giants proceeded to top the Cincinnati Reds by a 3-2 margin. A native of Ireland, O'Donnell was apparently visiting the area as a New York Times article indicates that he attended a Yankees vs. White Sox game just four days later, on June 19th, 1926. Adding to the backstory, this was from the very narrow window in which O'Donnell served as Cardinal, being appointed by Pope Pius XI in December of 1925, and passing away in November of 1927 at the age of 70. Ball originates from the collection of Jimmy Ring, who pitched in the game.
