At Yankee Stadium on June 18, 1936, the first bout between Joe Louis & Max Schmeling was an awakening for Joe Louis, who had been previously undefeated as a professional boxer. His rematch two years later, in which Louis scored a KO in the first round was watched worldwide with Schmeling as a symbol of Nazi Germany and Louis representing the rest of the free world.
