Knute Rockne and Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football Team Photograph (PSA)

Knute Rockne and Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football Team Photograph (PSA)

Presented is a Type IV photograph of the 1910 Notre Dame Football Team, with player Knute Rockne. Rockne, who was born Knut Larsen Rokne in Norway, moved to Chicago with his parents when he was five-years-old. After completing high school, Rockne worked in the post office to earn money to attend college and he entered Notre Dame in 1910, as a 22-year-old freshman. That year he played on the Notre Dame Football Team, as an end. In the offered photo, he is pictured third from the right, in the front row. The 1910 team finished with a record of 4-1-1, back when Notre Dame played mostly smaller schools, such as Olivet and Buchtel. The only loss in '10 was by 17-0 to Michigan Agricultural College, now called Michigan State University. In his senior year, 1913, Rockne became an All-American end, and in a famous game at West Point, defeated Army when quarterback Gus Dorais and Rockne consistently used passing plays downfield against the Cadets. This famous game marked the first time in a major football game teams had regularly employed the forward pass throughout the game. Later, as Notre Dame's head coach, Rockne had a 105-12-5 record, which included five undefeated and untied campaigns and three consensus National Championships. Rockne died in a plane crash in 1931, ironically on his way to the California movie set of the making of the film The Spirit of Notre Dame. He was installed into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1951 as a charter member. The photograph measures 4.5x9". The photo was affixed in an album so there is remnant of the album on back. The photo is in good condition, with some creasing and minor tear to bottom left edge. The item has been encapsulated and PSA certified "Type IV Authentic c. 1920s". The presented photo makes an unusual memento in that the great Rockne is shown as a Notre Dame player.
