Large Collection of 1910 Jack Johnson vs. James Jeffries Postcards (100)
On July 4, 1910 in Reno, Nevada World Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson defended his title against the former champion Jim Jeffries in one of the most celebrated fights of all time. Jeffries ended a 5 year retirement to attempt to win the title from Johnson, the first African-American to lay claim to the coveted prize. Despite the hoopla Johnson dominated the fight from the outset and stopped Jeffries in the 15th round to retain the title. Offered here is an incredible lot of 100 real photo postcards which were shot at the time of the fight and circulated shortly thereafter. All but three of the postcards were shot by noted photographer Percy Dana. All measure 3 3/8” x 5 ?.” There are 41 actual shots from the fight itself. 7 are from training, 8 are posed shots, 12 are crowd scenes in Reno and 26 are introductions before the fights. Notable fighters along with Johnson and Jeffries pictured include Langford, Nelson, Gotch, Sullivan, Fitzsimmons as well as others. The postcards range from VG to EX. Some have tack holes Almost all have the AAZOA stamp on the reverse. An extraordinary collection of photo postcards commemorating one of boxings best remembered events.
