Led Zeppelin Signed Album
Extremely hard to find copy of Zep's seminal album signed by the four members of the group on the back jacket, on which they appear in a plum-color-tinted, wraithlike haze looking like shaggy choirboys but with a distinctly ominous look in their eyes that would be borne out in future albums. The eponymous "Led Zeppelin" (Atlantic SD8216) was released on January 12, 1969 -- as it happens, the day Joe Namath's Jets won Super Bowl III -- and both events would have a profound effect on the order of nature and man, Zep's being the creation of a new rock genre called heavy metal, though on this album they were just starting to break loose from their blues rock roots in such songs as "Dazed and Confused", "You Shook Me", "Your Time is Gonna Come", and "Communication Breakdown." Actually, calling Zep merely a heavy metal band is an injustice, as Robert Plant's obsession with occult themes and Jimmy Page's fearless experimentation on guitar reached way beyond labels. Nothing about them was common, ordinary or safe -- including hotel rooms, or John Bonham's liver. The signatures of Plant, Bonham and bassist John Paul Jones are in purple magic marker, Page's in brown marker. All NRMT and splendid, as is the green, red and white-label disk inside the jacket, which is VG-EX with some surface soiling and a piece of adhesive tape along the lower back edge that reaches over to the front left corner. Signed Zep albums like this are, in the words of one of their best songs, houses of the holy.
